Day 26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?

I got loads of help on the general geography and appearance of roads around the US for a handful of throw away lines in Taking Care, but then I find people are always interested in talking about where they live if you ask interesting questions. :D
I did a fair amount of research into Elizabethan and Native American culture, language and traditions and still managed to get that sequence of fics so entirely wrong that I pissed people off because of it.
I think there are reasons I'm not that kind of researcher in real life. I'm not particularly good at it.


Day 27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

There's a specific seat on my usual train into work - which isn't really a seat, it's a plastic box in the corner - and that's where I like to be (see below, I'd forgotten I'd taken this photo). That's where I sit, me and my note pad. When I have a story right there in my head it generally goes straight onto the computer - faster typing - but if I'm working through ideas I use paper and pen. I am very fussy over which pens I use too.




Day 28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?

I have used another writer's character before. As previously mentioned, it was bad.


Day 29 – What is your current project or projects?

I have one major project under another psudo, and then my projects here at the moment are Taking Care, First Bite, I Return and two larger S/E/N pieces. The bits and pieces of closing for PMP and LTP are on their way too.


Day 30 – Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

Day 24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

Can I have a beta please? :(

My big-big fic has two betas, for different things, both of whom have all but given up needling me about it it's been so long. I've had betas for my LotR stuff, and for some of my Mutant X stuff. But I haven't found a Leverage beta yet. No horror stories, because each one did what they could with what I gave them, but I've had some awesome betas along the way. My love to each and every one.

Day 25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

I like people talking in the background, or something going on, but not music (the words get in the way). I have written to Steve Reich's Tehillim, but that was a fairly specific case. Silence is generally good if I'm already struggling for focus.

Day 23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

My journal and generally a couple of communities I think will enjoy it. I used to use fanfiction.net but I got fed up with the ignorance, poor quality and aggressive ethics over there and didn't want to be associated. I used to use Heliopolis and Area 52:HKH back when I wrote SG1 and Onca's Dreams back when I wrote Mutant X (and it was still a decent archive and not garishly Pink). I still use logan_remy on yahoo groups to post certain Logan/Remy stuff.

Being away from my internets suck.

Day 19 - When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

Depends on the situation and the rabidness of the bunny. I always carry paper and pens (literally always. Even to clubs, which has led to some fairly random situations) and so I'm in the situation to write all the time. But at the very least I'll write down the bunny or the line of dialogue or whatever. The worst time bunnies strike it just before you fall asleep and you know it's an excellent bunny but moving to get a pen would just be TOO MUCH EFFORT. I have written some bunnies down and been unable to read them the following morning. If it's a very rabid bunny I won't be able to help myself and it'll write itself on the spot. I'm generally better putting that straight on the computer because I don't need the prompt of the paper and pen and I can type faster than I can write (but still not quite as fast as I think. I'm working on it)

Day 20 - Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

Stories, yes definitely. Art not so much. Despite being born into an arty family I don't get as much out of art as I do stories.

Day 21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

Yes, because there was more story to tell or because I wanted to write the same characters into a different style or from a different point of view. Often just because continuing within one story constrains the way you use the characters and can damage the neatness of an arc. I'm crap enough at closing arcs as it is.

Day 22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

I'm not sure if leveragexchange counts, but I've been involved in that. Unfortunately the rabid bunny I was handed by carinascott ate my face and I'm still writing it a year and then some later. I think contraining me to a timeline helped me close that story (the first chapter) but I'm not a fan of deadlines in general. (as evidenced by me still working on a report two months after they stopped paying me)

Day 18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?

Music, the original canon material, often from other people's fic or comments. Generally the epic stuff I write happens spontaneously, after I've had the one big idea to carry through a series, the smaller parts prompt themselves based on the bigger picture. That's why my shorts are very short, and my longs never stop.

Day 17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

For no apparent reason, much much easier than summaries. Perhaps because generally commentfics name themselves and for everything else there's either an obvious line or a music/poetry reference to be made. Chapter titles are rare, and only ever for some stylistic reason, or guidance or effect in the story.
